Seaman First Class Mattix was one of fourteen crew members Killed In Action aboard the heavy cruiser U.S.S. Portland (CA-33) during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands.

Note: bio info provided by Tim Cook (#46481904)

NARA War Department records list his Next of Kin's Home of Record as Father: Mr. Simon S. Mattix, 1123 West 3rd Street; El Dorado, Kansas.

More than six months after participating in the Battle of the Coral Sea (May 4-8, 1942), the USS Portland was engaged in the Battle of Guadalcanal and struck by a torpedo on the starboard quarter. At that moment, Seaman Mattix's body was lodged between steel structures in a small control room, and in moments had to be sealed off by the crew to protect the ship. With assistance, the USS Portland anchored at Tulagi (Solomon Islands) on November 14 for temporary repairs, departed Tulagi on November 22 and arrived in Sydney, Australia on November 30, 1942. His body was recovered and temporarily interred in Ipswich, Queensland, Australia until 1948 when his body was returned to his family in El Dorado KS. Seventy-five years later, in April 2023, Robert's dog tag was found in a river bank near his temporary burial location in Queensland and mailed to the family.
