William Gray's obituary (Uncle Billy Gray)
After several months of Suffering and in infirmities of age William Gray entered the waiting rest Thursday afternoon, October 4th at his home at Mt. Eagle, in the Sturgeon Country

He was born at St. Old Orchard May 3rd 1844, the son of Silas and Minerva (Portwood) Gray, who where Pioneers of that Country. His wife had passed on three years before the 16th of last January, and they left surviving four sons, Sid, Hardin, Robert and Columbus; and three daughters; Mrs. Edna Farmer and Mrs. Lillian Smith, of Cincinnati.

His wife was Miss Mary Brandenburg, a daughter of James Brandenburg, a long time noted and respected resident here on the mouth of Sturgeon, and a granddaughter of Joseph Brandenburg, the first white settler at the Heidelberg country about 1798.

The Gray's were a very noted family in the literary and court circles of England in the early days while the Brandenburg's and their kin ranked high among the ruling classes that for a thousand years held sway in the principalities that made up the German empire.

And the good traits of them all were manifest in Uncle Billy's well-ordered life-----the life of a quiet industrious Christian Gentleman. For some years he was a soldier a veteran of the Civil War,serving in the 47th Kentucky Volunteer infantry; and he was among the very last to be living of that noted regiment.

He was widely known as an active lay member of the Christian Church, whose services he attended in all available places; as he had answered thirty -three roll' calls at Annual Meetings in this section of the London District.

At peace with God and man he lived---- a long and useful life:-------in death his faith sustained. They laid him to rest in the family burying ground; his mortality there ----- his soul at home in the House not made with Hands.
