On January 4, 1908, Col. Herman Heniger, 68, a prominent resident of Bushdale, died of a heart attack while traveling on a train from Rockdale to Giddings. The Reporter's obituary* praised Heniger's life and works and mentioned he was a "Civil War veteran," conveniently omitting the detail that he had fought for the Union army. A life-sized statue of Col. Heniger was placed on his grave at Bushdale and became an area landmark until it fell victim to vandals in 1973. Rockdale Reporter, January 6, 2000
