Erasmus Nichols was born to Thomas and Martha Hadley Nichols. He enlisted, June 10, 1862, in Company A, Fifty-third Indiana infantry. He served until honorably discharged two years later and re-enlisted in Company B, One Hundred and Seventeenth Indiana Infantry, and was promoted to Sergeant. He served nine months and was honorably discharged in 1865, at the end of the war. He was married to Sallie Gregg and they were the parents of one child, Mayme G. Nichols Brill.
