US Congressman. Born at the family estate "Beverly" in Worcester County, Maryland, he attended Washington Academy and graduated from Yale College in 1803. After a decade of private law practice he served as a member of the State House of Delegates (1815 to 1816, 1819 to 1827), on the Maryland Executive Council (1829), and as an elector of the State Senate (1831). Dennis was elected as an Anti-Jacksonian to the Twenty-Third Congress, representing Maryland's 1st District, and served for 13 months, from March 1833 to April 1834. He died in office. His uncle and his cousin, both named John Dennis, were also US Congressmen.
