United States Representative. After being admitted to the Indiana bar, he established a legal practice in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He was elected to the United States Congress from Indiana and served from 1857 to 1861. During the Civil War he served as a First Lieutenant in the 44th Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry and later as a Major in the Third Regiment Indiana Volunteer Cavalry. Following the Civil War, he resumed his legal career in Washington, D. C.
