Born in Jacksonville, Illinois on July 26, 1891, Catharine was the daughter and granddaughter of Illinois governors (Richard Yates (1861–1865) and Richard Yates. She was the co-author of the book, "Richard Yates, War Governor." Catharine was the daughter of Richard Yates and Helen Wadsworth. She attended Jacksonville schools and the Illinois Woman's College. Her education also included time in Nashville, Tennessee at Belmont College and Miss Stan's School in Rome, Italy.

She married John Lyle Pickering, Jr.; he preceded her in death. The children surviving her were: John L. Pickering, III of Minnetonka, Minnesota; Mrs. Dorothy Ann Avery of Arlington; Virginia, Mrs. Mary Catharine Finch of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan; and Mrs. Jane P. LeMont of Dearborn, Michigan. Catharine was a grandmother to twelve children and great-grandmother to one.

Her sister, Mrs. Dorothy Yates Hendderson of Ayr, Scotland, also survives.

The funeral was held from St. Raphaels Episcopal church in Fort Myers Beach.
