John was fighting for the Confederacy in Vicksburg when he became ill & they sent him home on furlough to recover. This was right after the fall of Vicksburg. He did recover and was returning to the battle soon, perhaps after Christmas, to rejoin his regiment when he was shot by a Union bushwacker in Rheatown.

One child not linked due to unknown date and location of burial was David Byerly who was born in February 1863. He died after 1880.
