Enlisted August 25, 1862 as Private in Company C, New York 16th Infantry Regiment. Killed in action barely three weeks later, September 14 1862 at Crampton's Pass, Maryland. Buried near battlefield, but with other casualties of that battle moved to Antietam when cemetery was established in 1865. Most Crampton's Pass fatalities are buried in unmarked graves.

Sidney was reared by his mother, Sally E. Hare, and uncle, Benjamin Franklin Hare, who lived in Schuyler Falls. About 1860, he married Delia Everleth, and in 1861, they had a son, Loahey B. Hare. Delia died in 1862 -- Sidney enlisted shortly after, leaving son L.B. in his mother Sally's care.

Records contained in Sidney's pension file (pension to benefit L.B.) are helpful.
