George Arthur, son of Joseph and Rachel Cardwell was born November 7, 1878, near Scandia, and passed away at his home in Scandia May 16, 1950 , at the age of 72 years, six months and nine days.
On February 6, 1901 he was united in marriage to Agnes Kathinka Rasmussen of Union Township and to this union, three sons and one daughter were born, Homer, Alice, Charley, and George.
He was engaged in farming until 1930 when he moved to Scandia, where he operated a Service Station until 1947.
He was baptized in the Amana Lutheran church December 9, 1941.
Affectionately known as Uncle Art, he was of a generous and cheerful disposition, young and old were his friends. He always wanted his children close to him and they came with their families at every opportunity.
He was interest in the progress of his community and took an active part in community affairs.
Through his recent illness his family watched by his bedside day and night knowing that he was drifting away from the, anxious to comfort his every need.
His father, mother and three brothers Ackless, Pleasant William, and James Alison and sister Ida M Mahan, preceded him in death.
Surviving him are his widow, Agnes K, children, Homer, Charley, and George Cardwell and Alice Greenslade and their families; two brothers; eight grandchildren, Pauline Cardwell, Mrs Norman Aspegren, Phyllis Greenslade, Arthur, Raymond, Kenneth and Janet Cardwell and Steven Cardwell; two great-grandchildren, Phyllis Diane Aspegren and Ardith Jean Cardwell; two brother , Joseph of Fredrick, Ok, and Fred H of Lake Andes, So Dak, seven nieces and nine nephews, many relatives and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held Friday afternoon, May 19 from the home at 2 :00 and the Amana Lutheran church at 2:30 conducted by Rev N H Pearson with interment in the Prairie Rose cemetery.
