U.S. Congressman, Connecticut Governor. Born the grandson of Connecticut Governor Matthew Griswold, he graduated from Yale College in 1780, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1783 and commenced to practice law in Norwich, Connecticut. In 1795, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fourth Congress and to the next five succeeding Congresses, serving until 1805. He then served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Connecticut, in 1807 and was Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut, (1809-11). In 1811, he was elected as a Federalist the 25th Governor of Connecticut, serving until his death at age 50. While in office, he contended with issues that resulted from the War of 1812.
