U.S. Congressman. He attended Plainfield Academy, graduated from Dartmouth College New Hampshire, in 1786, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1790 and commenced to practice law in Plainfield, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1795-1801). In 1801, he was elected as a Federalist to the Seventh Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Elizur Goodrich, reelected to the Eighth and Ninth Congresses, serving until his resignation in 1805. He was again elected to the Connecticut State House of Representatives in 1807, a member of the executive council, (1808-15), judge of the superior court, (1815, 18) and Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut, (1814-34).
