US Congressman, Connecticut Governor. Born in Canterbury, Connecticut, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1819 and commenced to practice law in Hampton, Connecticut. He was a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives (1826-29, 1832, 1835- 36, 1838, 1847-48), Connecticut State’s attorney in 1832 and Connecticut State bank commissioner in 1838. He was elected the 31st Governor of Connecticut in 1842 and served until 1843, then resumed the practice of law. In 1849 he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving until 1853. After his term he was a member of the peace convention of 1861, to prevent the impending Civil War, held in Washington, D.C. he was again a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives, (1863-66) and engaged in agricultural pursuits, until his death at age 88 in Hampton, Connecticut.
