Samuel Henriques, 44 of 4 Angel Ave. Shelton,was stricken with a fatal heart attack last night registering for a first aid class at the Ansonia Y.M.C.A.
Mr. Henriques was sitting with other members of the class while registration was taking place. Suddenly he fell from his chair to the floor.
Steven Brenia, American Red Cross instructor, and Miss Evelyn Hollingsworth, R.N.,who were to conduct the course,immediately gave Mr. Henriques mouth-to-mouth resuscitation in an attempt to revive him. Richard Nicolari assisted.
Officers Thomas Tuccio and Ello A. Mariotte of the Ansonia Police Department were dispatched to the Y.M.C.A. by Sgt. George Cadieux who had received the call from Mr. Nicolari at 7:40 p.m. the ambulance arrived within 5 minutes. Both officers administered oxygen and then rushed the stricken man to Griffin Hospital,in Derby.
A new emergency system at the Hospital for all cardiac arrest cases was put into effect. All available physicians answered the call. They worked desperately in an attempt to revive Mr. Henriques.
Mr. Henriques was born in Shelton on May 21,1921 and was the son of Mrs. Constantine Henriques of Oxford and the late Mr. Henriques.
Mr. Henriques was manager of the Bond Rubber Co.,in Derby. He was an ARMY, VETERAN of World WAR II. He enlisted in 1939 and was stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, when the Japanese attacked on Dec. 7, 1941. He attained the rank of MASTER SERGEANT while serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
Mr. Henriques was a member of the Shelton Congregational Church and was affiliated with Sutter-Terlizzi Post, American Legion, Shelton; Coram Garden Fire Company,Coram Garden Civic club and the Rubber Workers' Association of America.
Surviving besides his wife the former Charlotte L. Stevens, and by his mother, and by 2 sons, Charles L. and Samuel A. and a daughter Mrs. Eileen M. Swan, all of Shelton; a grandson three brothers,David of San Diego,California, Constantine JR of North Haven and Donald of Hamden; three sister's, Mrs. Isabelle of Oxford; Mrs. Grace of Hamden and Mrs. Florence of Oxford; several nieces and nephews.
