Poet. He was born as the seventh of thirteen children to the physican Carl Friedrich Moerike and his wife Charlotte Dorothea in Ludwigsburg (near Stuttgart). In 1822 he began his studies in theology in Tuebingen. He passed his exams in 1826. He was a vicar for eight years in various towns: in Oberboihingen, Moehringen, Koengen, Pflummern, Plattenhardt, Owen, Eltingen, Ochsenwang und Oethlingen. In 1832 his first novel "Maler Nolten" (Painter Nolten) appeared at Schweizerbart publishers in Stuttgart. In 1834 he finally got the post as a priest in Cleversulzbach (near Heilbronn) he had yearned for so long: Together with his mother and his sister Klara he probably experienced the well happiest years of his life - until 1843. Several poems and tales were written there.Together with his sister he moved in 1844 to Bad Mergentheim where he got to know the 26 year old Margarethe whom he later married. They had two daughters but no happy marriage. They separated in 1873.In 1851 he moved to Stuttgart and increased his small pension by giving lessons to girls in the local school Katharinenstift. He wrote his last prose works in Stuttgart, e. g. in 1852 "Das Stuttgarter Hutzelmaennlein" (a tale about a local mythological figure), in 1853 "Die Hand der Jezerte" (Jezerte's hand) and in 1855 "Mozarts Reise nach Prag" (Mozart's journey to Prague). He was made an honorary doctor of the University of Tuebingen in 1852. Other authors like Storm, Heyse, Geibel visited or got to know him as he had become more and more popular. He moved several times, but came back to Stuttgart finally in 1871.
