Husband of Jennie V. (Freeman) Mathew (1849-1936). Father of Harriet and Alice Mathew. Son of Lewis Mathew and Mary (Hardesty) Patterson Mathew Arnold. John was a veteran of the Civil War. He fought for the 31st Iowa Infantry, Co. E. He was also a member of the G.A.R. His regiment fought in many battles in the Civil War including Vicksburg, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta and Savannah.
