Almeda Joyce Allen Hendrickson, 77, of Jerome, passed away Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at her home.

She was born Aug. 14, 1933, at Anna, Ill., to James Frederick Allen and Bernice Ermine Ross Allen. Almeda and her brother, Frederick Ross Allen, were raised on the Navajo Reservation where her parents were employed as elementary school teachers by the Federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy High School in Waterflow, N.M., in 1950.

She earned a diploma in nursing from Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing in Denver, Colo., a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Denver and a master's degree in nursing from the University of Colorado in 1960. She specialized in the field of maternal and child nursing care.

Almeda held a variety of nursing positions in Denver and in Alaska as a teacher in nursing schools, as a public health nurse consultant and as a nurse manager from 1955-1993.

She married Dean L. Hendrickson of Jerome, Idaho, in August 1993 in the Seattle Washington LDS Temple. They settled in Jerome after living in Anchorage, Alaska, since 1970. In 1994, Dean and Almeda served a proselyting mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Detroit, Mich. Almeda enjoyed doing genealogy and keeping in contact with immediate and extended family.

Almeda is survived by her stepdaughter, Terri Jeanette Williams (Wayne) Sorensen of Poway, Calif.; her daughter, Nizhoni "Star" Amoureux (Jason Moncrieff) of Anchorage; her stepson, Scott William Hendrickson of Indio Hills, Calif.; six grandchildren, Ian, Jordan, Taran, Darien, Josey and Nic; and two great-grandchildren, Atley and Holly Almeda. She is preceded in death by her husband, Dean Hendrickson; her parents; and her brother, Frederick Ross Allen.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 23, in the Jerome Cemetery, 901 W. Ave. I in Jerome.
