Millie Bell's husband George and his nephew William T Bell were convicted of manslaughter in Millie's death. Millie was a difficult woman and she and George had not gotten along well, and separated. On the day of her death, she and her daughters Lizzie and Rosella attacked George and his relatives when they were leaving the fields after harvesting George's crops. In the melee, Millie was hit on the head and died later that night.
George Bell's statement
I have six children living, Mary Elizabeth, Zilphia, Martha, Maggie, Rosella and Irving. Mary Elizabeth is sort o' like her mother, and is a hard case. She married Perry Smith and left him for no reason whatever. At one time she hit him over the head with a tin bucket.
Zilphia married William Strickland. They are living happily together in the Lake Swamp. Martha married Joe Graham and they live near Greensea. Maggie married Sidney Collins of Marion and they live up about Red Bluff in North Carolina. Rosella is about 18 years old, unmarried and living at home. Irving, my only son, lives near me and is married.
