US Senator. Born the son of Senator John H. Bankhead, he graduated from the University of Alabama, in 1891, from the law department of Georgetown University Washington, D.C., in 1893, was admitted to the bar in 1893 and commenced to practice law in Jasper, Alabama. He served as a Major in the Alabama National Guard, (1901-03), was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives, (1904-05), president of the Bankhead Coal Company, (1911-25) and was a trustee of the University of Alabama, (1917-19, 31). In 1931, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate and served until his death from a stroke at age 73.
