U.S. Congressman. Born in Botetourt County, Virginia, as a child, he moved with his parents to Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He was assistant secretary of the Alabama State Senate and comptroller of public accounts in 1829. During the 1836 Florida-Indian War, he was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Alabama Volunteers. After the war, he was a member of the Alabama State House of Representatives (1836 to 1837), served in the Alabama State Senate (1837 to 1838), and was a Major General of the Alabama Militia. In 1836, he was elected as a Whig to the Twenty-fifth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Joab Lawler. He was reelected to the Twenty-sixth Congress, serving until 1841. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed judge of the Alabama Mobile County Court in 1846 and served until his death at age 42 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
