US Senator. Born in Springfield, Prince Edward Island, Canada, he moved first to Michigan, then to Nebraska and later to Leadville, Colorado, in 1881. Interested in mining, he advanced from a miner to president of the Western Mining Company, discovered the zinc ore which bears his name as, “Nicholsonite”. He was Mayor of Leadville, (1893-97), served in World War I, was Colorado State chairman of the Liberty and Victory loan campaigns and a member of United States Fuel Administration. In 1921, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 64 in Denver, Colorado.
