U.S. Congressman, U.S. Senator. Moving with his parents to Jefferson County, Iowa, in 1844, he studied medicine until 1850 and was Sheriff of Jefferson County, in 1853. He moved to the Territory of Nebraska, in 1856 and was a member of the Territorial House of Representatives 1856, then moved to the Territory of Colorado, in 1859. There he was a member of the Territorial Council, (1861-62), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1863 and was register of the United States land office, (1863-67). In 1867, he was elected as a Republican Delegate to the Fortieth Congress, serving until 1869. After his term, he was a member, Territorial Council, (1872-74), a member of the Colorado State House of Representatives in 1878 and appointed to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Henry M. Teller, serving (1882-83). He then lived in retirement in Missouri, until death at age 63.
