A.E. Stenstrom
Dies at Home
Hold Funeral Rites on Wednesday
Funeral services for Andrew Emil Stenstrom, 74 city superintendent of streets, who died yesterday at his home, 126 North Chicago Avenue, will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Wilbur Christenson funeral home, 925 3rd Avenue. Dr. Albert Loreen, pastor of First Lutheran Church, will officiate and burial will be in Willwood Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 8 o'clock this evening.
Mr. Stenstrom, who had been in failing health the last two months, first became head of the street department in 1922 during the administration of former Mahyor J. Herman Hallstrom. He continued in his post until 1927, when Burt Allen defeated Hallstrom, but was reappointed in 1929 when Hallstrom returned to office and served until 1933.
Removed from his post by Mayor C. Henry Bloom in 1933, Stenstrom was reappointed as street superintendent by former Mayor Charles P. Brown in 1937 and remained on the job continuously until he became seriously ill shortly before Christmas.
Many of the city's major street improvements were completed during the years he headed the department.
Born in Westergotland, Sweden, Dec. 24, 1870, he came to this country with his parents as a boy. They settled on a farm near Pecatonica and Mr. Stenstrom learned the trade of a bricklayer. He married Alma Lundquist at Pecatonica on Jan. 20, 1897, and three years later they moved to Rockford.
Surviving, besides his widow, are two sisters, Mrs. Augusta Phelps and Miss Mary Stenstrom, and a brother, John Stenstrom, all of Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.
Two sisters, Mrs. Edward Carlson and Miss Emma Stenstrom, and a brother, Carl Stenstrom, preceded him in death.
