***MERIWETHER ANCESTRAL FAME***

Margaret Meriwether Chandler
is the direct descendant of
Nicholas Meriwether I(NMI, 1631-1678) and
Col Nicholas Meriwether II(NMII, 1665-1744);
the latter who is the maternal great grandfather of:

MERIWETHER LEWIS, leader of the LEWIS AND CLARK EXPEDITION. He was appointed by Thomas Jefferson to blaze trails throughout Lousianna and the Pacific Northwest; thus securing the continent. Thomas Jefferson, rewarded him with 1500 acres of land in Lousianna and a governorship.

-Col NICHOLAS MERIWETHER II, fathered
JANE 'MERIWETHER' LEWIS (1705-1757) and
DAVID MERIWETHER(1690-1744).

As a result,
Margaret Meriwether Chandler is also the direct descendant of Jane's brother,
David Meriwether. David is the father of
THOMAS MERIWETHER(1713-1757)
who fathered
LUCY MERIWETHER(1752-1837,
mother of
Capt Meriwether Lewis.

......................................
-Of Further Interest:
..."Descendants of Nicholas Meriwether II &
.....Elizabeth Crawford are eligible
.....for membership in the Magna Charta
.....or to the Barons of
.....Runnymede(NHM p. 174)".
.......................................

............To Resume:............
+JANE MERIWETHER(daughter of Col NMII)
married
COL ROBERT LEWIS,
of which that union, produced offspring, including
Lt William Lewis.
By the way, Col Lewis' second wife(m1761) was
ELIZABETH THORNTON
who was the first wife of
Thomas Meriwether(b1713),
both being the parents of
Lucy Meriwether(b1752).

*[Of further interest, Elizabeth comes from a long european history traceable to 1066 AD during the time of William the Conqueror in England; and maternally(nee Taliaferro), from Italy to Normandy in 868 AD]. Margaret Meriwether Chandler is therefore also a direct descendant of Elizabeth Thornton, as is Meriwether Lewis.

++Lt WILLIAM LEWIS married
Lucy Meriwether(b1752),
who is also a great niece of William's mother,
Jane Meriwether Lewis,
that union producing offspring, to include:

+++Capt MERIWETHER LEWIS(1774-1809). Meriwether Lewis had no known offspring. His first name is apparently derived from his mother's or grandmother's maiden name.

-According to the above,
MARGARET MERIWETHER CHANDLER
is a first cousin, 4x removed of
Meriwether Lewis via his mother,
Lucy Meriwether Lewis(1752-1837);

and second cousin, 5x removed via his grandmother,
Jane Meriwether Lewis(1705-1757).

TO SUMMARIZE:

Jane Meriwether Lewis
was the first wife of
Col Robert Lewis
they producing a son,
Lt William Lewis,
who fathered
Meriwether Lewis.

Jane was the daughter of
Col Nicholas Meriwether II,
grandfather of
Thomas Meriwether,
who married
Elizabeth Thornton,
both who produced
Lucy Meriwether.

Lucy Meriwether Lewis was
Lt William Lewis' wife,
they producing son,
Capt Meriwether Lewis.

Lucy was the daughter of:
Thomas Meriwether and
Elizabeth Thornton,
-who became the 2nd wife(m1761) of
Col Robert Meriwether in later years(after Jane Lewis and Thomas Meriwether both died coincidentally in 1757).

Oddly, that made Elizabeth a paternal step grandmother to Meriwether Lewis, in addition to being his 'actual' maternal grandmother.

Therefore, Jane is the Great Aunt of Lucy(who married Jane's son, William),
that union producing Meriwether Lewis

Thus in detail, are the family ancestors of
Captain Meriwether Lewis...and, in part, Margaret Meriwether Chandler.

..............OF INCIDENTAL NOTE:.............

Jefferson-Washington &
Lewis-Meriwether
Connections
:

By virtue of the Meriwether & Lewis unions, the THOMAS JEFFERSON and GEORGE WASHINGTON families are also related; eg, specifically:

who was the father of
Col Robert Lewis(1702-1765),
grandfather of
Meriwether Lewis

Married:

1st-CATHERINE WASHINGTON LEWIS
(1724-1750),
daughter of
John Washington III(1692-1746),
who was the uncle of

2nd-BETTY WASHINGTON LEWIS(1733-1797),
sister of
GEORGE WASHINGTON(first US President);
..........

the brother of
GEORGE WASHINGTON(first US President)

Married:

*COL JOHN THORNTON(1743-1822)
who was the son of
Francis Thornton(1714-1748).
Francis and sister,
Elizabeth Thornton Meriwether Lewis(abt:1719~1774)
were the offspring of
Col Francis Thornton Jr(1682-1739) and
Mary Taliaferro Thornton(1685-1741).

Recall that Elizabeth was first married to
Thomas Meriwether,
both of whom were parents of
Lucy Meriwether Lewis,
who was the mother of
Capt Meriwether Lewis.

Elizabeth later married
Col Robert Lewis in 1761,
who incidentally was the grandfather of
Capt MERIWETHER LEWIS(1774-1809)

...Additional Presidential Relations...

Once again our attention is focused on:

ELIZABETH THORNTON LEWIS,
wife of Thomas Meriwether and Col Robert Lewis, mother of Lucy Meriwether Lewis and grandmother of Meriwether Lewis.

-Again, her parents were:
Francis Thornton(1682-1739)
Mary Taliaferro Thornton(1685-1741)

Elizabeth's sister is:

Alice Thornton Taylor(1708-1739);
-She is also a 2nd cousin of:
*President GEORGE WASHINGTON.

Alice married:

James Taylor(1703-1784),
-who is the brother of:

Zachary Taylor(1707-1768),
-who was the grandfather of:

*President ZACHARY TAYLOR(1784-1850),
-who was the father of :
-+Sarah Knox Taylor Davis(1814-1835),
--who was the wife of:

*JEFFERSON FINIS DAVIS(1808-1889),
-first President of the Confederate States of America.

Again regarding:

James Taylor(1703-1784),
-he is also the brother of:

Frances Taylor Madison(1700-1761),
-who is the grandmother of:

*President JAMES MADISON(1751-1836)

***More Meriwether Historical Notes***

The Meriwether ancestry can also be traced well before Nicholas Meriweither II; through to a 'FATHER' Meriwether(b1600) in England; whose son was Nicholas Meriwether I(father of NMII) that immigrated to the Jamestown Colony.

-It was NICHOLAS MERIWETHER I, who immigrated from England arriving in Jamestown, VA around 1652. Nicholas served as a clerk of the Quarter Court and Governor's Council for the Colony in Jamestown. He was a land owner and tobacco exporter; that land being bought from the uncle of Nathaniel Bacon of "Bacon's Rebellion". His nemesis was the Governor of Virginia, Sir William Berkeley.

+His son, COLONEL NICHOLAS MERIWETHER II, at one point owned about 33,000 acres. In 1735 he built his plantation, "The Farm", the site of which now sits the city of Charlottesville, Virginia. His will, one of the longest recorded in Virginia, was witnessed by Peter Jefferson, father of THOMAS JEFFERSON.

REVOLUTIONARY WAR HERO:

*THOMAS MERIWETHER(1761-1833), was personally selected by General Marquis Lafayette as his best rifleman to snipe upon General Cornwallis from an important observation post. He was honored with a gravesite marker, posthumously in Monticello by the 'DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION'
..........................................................

-Major DAVID MERIWETHER, Sr(1800-1867) was married four times with at least eleven offspring; and the last wife being Matilda Ann Pearson Meriwether(1812-1875) with whom he had seven children, three of which are listed below:

+Charles Mathews Meriwether who was named in honor of his grandmother, Rebecca Mathews Meriwether, a daughter of Governor Mathews, of Georgia;

+Lucy Meriwether(different than above), who was the wife of John W. Lewis of Marietta, GA,. Her husband's father, the Reverend John W. Lewis reared and educated Governor Brown and James Brown, of Georgia; two of the most prominent characters in that state.

+Cpl David Meriwether*(1842-1910), Margaret Meriwether Chandler's direct ancestor(paternal grandfather)...see below:

*CIVIL WAR VETERAN:

-*Cpl DAVID MERIWETHER, JR(1842-1910), another son of Major David and Matilda Pearson Meriwether,
*Confederate Veteran. Served in the 19th Georgia Cavalry Battalion which was organized in 1862. This unit eventually merged into the 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment.

**NOTE: Cpl David Meriwether is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery, Kansas City, Jackson County, Missouri; which is the same cemetary his son, WILLIAM WHEELER MERIWETHER is buried.

+William Wheeler Meriwether is MARGARET MERIWETHER CHANDLER'S father.
