SUPERIOR - Burton K. (Bernie) Walsh, 82, peacefully passed away Monday, July 11, 2011, at his home in Superior.

Bernie was born Nov. 10, 1928, in Missoula to William A. and Ann Jean (Weiler) Walsh. Growing up in Missoula, he attended Saint Anthony Elementary through fifth grade, Willard School through eighth grade, and Missoula County (Hellgate) High School, from which he graduated in 1947.

He entered the 2nd Armored Division of the Army on Jan. 5, 1951, and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War. He returned to the USA in December 1952. He joined the Montana National Guard in October 1956. In 1957, he received a direct commission to 2nd lieutenant after a branch change from artillery to infantry. He served in the Special Forces from 1963-1975 and retired with the rank of colonel on Nov. 10, 1988. One of his proudest accomplishments was his successful completion of U.S. Army Command and General Staff College.

Bernie joined the Missoula Fire Department in August 1954. He retired as fire chief in 1987 after 32 years of service. Bernie was a member of the Eagles Lodge in Missoula and the Elks Lodges of Missoula and of Ajo, Ariz., where he was held the rank of exalted ruler. He served on the Board of Directors of the Ajo Ambulance Service and the Ajo Country Club. He also served on the boards of the Superior Senior Citizen Center and the Mineral County Fair. He was commander of VFW Post No. 6238 in Superior and active in the VFW Honor Guard where he enjoyed playing taps on the bugle.

Bernie was first married to Norene Dunton on July 29, 1953. His second marriage was to Hyrel (MacDonald) Chambers on July 12, 1970.

He is survived by his wife, children, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Bernie was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Norene.

Bernie enjoyed many good retirement years fishing, camping, golfing, reading, and performing volunteer work in Ajo and Superior. He and Hyrel enjoyed traveling and their trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. His favorite "morning wake-up call" was with the gang at the Superior Coffee Club.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Aug. 20 at the Superior Cemetery.
