U.S. Senator, Mining Pioneer. He graduated from Brown University Rhode Island, in 1856 and was a professor of chemistry in Brown University, (1856-64). He moved to Colorado in 1865, where he perfected a method of smelting gold and silver ore and built the first successful smelter in the Rocky Mountains at Black Hawk, Colorado, in 1867. He also was the manager of the Boston & Colorado Smelting Company. Entering politics, he was Mayor of Black Hawk, in 1871, a member of Colorado Territorial Council, (1872-73), plus engaged in smelting and the real estate business. In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1885. After leaving the Senate, he was publisher of the Denver Republican and returned to his mining interests until his death. In 2005, he was posthumously inducted into the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum.
