Msgr. Thomas Scott Dies, Rites Saturday


The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Thomas F. Scott, 69, pastor of St. Francis Catholic church died Wednesday in Duluth. He died of an apparent heart attack while attending a diocese consultor's meeting.


Msgr. Scot was born Nov. 30, 1899 in Louisburgh, County Mayo, Ireland. He attended high school and junior college in Ireland and the St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul. He was ordained into the priesthood June 13, 1926, in St. Paul.


He was assistant pastor at the Holy Rosary church, Duluth, Blessed Sacrament church, Hibbing, and St. James church, Duluth. He was pastor of St. John's church in Hill City, the St. Louis church, Floodwood, and became pastor of St. Francis church July 19, 1942.


Msgr. Scott was dean of the Brainerd Deanery, a diocesan consultor for the diocese of Duluth, chaplain for the Knights of Columbus, a Faithful Friar of the Fourth Degree of Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Elks lodge.


He is survived by two brothers, the Rev. Joseph Scott and James Scott, Ireland; and one sister, Miss Rita Scott, Ireland.


A requiem con-celebrated mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic church. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.


Mayor Clyde Gorham today ordered that all flags be flown at half staff all day Saturday in honor of Msgr. Scott.


"The community has suffered a distinct loss in the passing of Msgr. Thomas Scott," the mayor said. "He was looked to not only as a leader in his church, but in the community as well."


Friends may call at St. Francis Catholic church from Friday noon until the time of services Saturday.


There will be a rosary service 7 p.m. Friday and a prayer service at 8 p.m. Friday. The prayer service is designed to accommodate persons unable to attend the rites on Saturday.
