Virgil was the son of Jefferson Davis and Macie Mae Stump Atkerson. He served in the United States Army from 1948 to 1951 in the occupation of Germany. He married JoAnne Ruth Gill on Jan. 16, 1955, in McAlester and they had one daughter. He worked as a farmer and on the railroad, but spent most of his life as an auto mechanic. He was a member and past grand at Odd Fellows Lodge in McAlester. At the age of 60, he began running as a hobby and his lanky frame was a familiar sight around McAlester. By the age of 76, he was averaging 65 miles a week while working a full time job. He was a "runner" and participated in many charity runs throughout the years. He was also a master story teller and kept anyone who was interested spellbound with stories of his youth and ancestors. Survivors include one sister, Lila McCurtain, Dallas; one brother-in-law, Bill Gill, of Tulsa, and nieces and nephews, Greg McCurtain, Atlanta, Barry McCurtain, Dallas, Monte McCurtain, Dallas, Millard (Bucky) Harp, of McAlester, Joe Harp, of McAlester, Glendolyn Stallsworth, Dallas, Larry Vaughn, San Antonio, Leohna Stacy, Houston, Glenn Phipps, San Antonio, and Shannon Dugger, of Roosevelt, Toni Yarbrough, Fort Worth, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Joanne; his daughter, Teresa; his brother-in-law, John Gill, and his sisters, Betty Diaz and Gloria Harp. Memorial graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at North McAlester Cemetery with the Rev. Brent Jarrett officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.
