Mrs. Emma Mathilda Palmquist (nee Hokanson), was born in Tving Parish, Blekinge, Sweden, May 24, 1861. Thus at the time of her departure Thursday, Sept 21, she had reached the advanced age of 83 years, 3 months and 28 days.
In early infancy she was brought unto the Lord in Holy Baptism. On May 23, 1875 she was confirmed in the parish church in Sweden, becoming thus a communicant member of the Lutheran church, which membership she maintained throughout her life.
Five years after confirmation or in 1880 she came to the United States, coming directly to Franconia to the home of an aunt and uncle.
After a few years spent in employment in the Twin Cities she returned to this community. Hence it was on January 1, 1864 she was united with the Chisago Lake Lutheran Church in Center City. Here she held membership through all the following period or for a period of over 60 years.
On Christmas Eve, 1886, she was married to Albert Palmquist, who now survives her. To this union 9 children were born.
Left to mourn the passing of this Christian wife and mother are the follow: the husband named above, the children: Arthur of Evansville, Ind, Mrs. Nanny Hammerberg at home for the past year and a half, Mrs. Lillian Dahlstrom of Minneapolis, George of Cosine, Sask, Canada, Clara of Anoka, Minn, Carl of Centuria, Wisconsin, Gilbert of Evansville, Ind, and Mrs. Amy Van Dyke and Luther both of Minneapolis. Also there is a brother Swank Hawkins of Tillamook, Oregon. There are 14 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren as well as many other more distantly related.
Following their marriage back in 1886 the Palmquist's made their home for 49 years in the
Pleasant Valley community. They moved to Center City in 1936.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon, Sept 23 with burial being made in the family plot in the Chisago Lake Church Cemetery, Center City with rev Gilbert T Monson in charge. Solos were sung by Mrs. Doris Mattson Nelson with Miss Agda Wennerberg at the organ. Pallbearers were: Geo W Erickson, Morton Ford, Emil Grandstrand, Loth Hall, Arthur W Hawkinson and Carl J Johnson.
Peace be over the memory of a deeply devout Christian soul.
