Another Confederate Veteran Died Monday

One of Arkansas two remaining Confederate veterans died Monday night at his home at Camp Victor, a small community in Pope County, Arkansas.

He was John Greene Chisum, age 103, who served “in the camp with General Price in Jackson County, just below Newport“. Chisum a native of Izard County Arkansas used to recall that he was in Company “G” but was uncertain about the regiment.

His death leaves William Loudermilk, of Jonesboro, as the only Confederate veteran in Arkansas. Two other died this year (1951) ; John A. Marcum, Age 97, died May 25th. at his home in the Birta Community in Yell County, near Ola, and Sam Bennett Russell, age 106, died March 9th. at his home at Heber Springs, in Cleburne County.

Mr. Chisum, who was with Price’s army when it surrendered near the end of the war, spent the latter part of his life around Ben Hur near the Pope-Newton County line and in parts of the Ozark country.
