After an illness of more than a month's duration, Gallant Anderson Bauswell, died at 12:35 p.m., December 9, 1915, in his home in Girard. Mr. Bauswell came to Girard with his family about May 1873. He was born in Jersey County Ill., August 5, 1848. He was an only child, and bore the name of his father, Gallant Anderson Bauswell, his birth occurring some two months after his father's death, which took place about June 1, 1848. His mother belonged to the celebrated White family of Illinois. She afterward married Joseph Rutherford, a soldier of the war of 1812, and he now lies buried in the Girard Cemetery. This Mr. Bauswell was married at Scottville, Ill., October 13, 1867, to Miss Kate Hudson, they having a prolonged married life of 48 years. To this union were born eleven children, six of whom, four girls and two boys, preceded their father to the grave. The five children now living are: Mrs. Anna Cloyd, Mrs. Ed Eccles, and Clarence Bauswell now resident in Girard; also Louie Bauswell and Dallas Bauswell, now of Hillsboro, Illinois. Mr. Bauswell had an enviable army record. He was a soldier of the civil war entering the service as a private on the 11th day of March, 1865, in Company E, 18th Regiment of Illinois Infantry serving nine months and five days and was honorably discharged the 16th day of December 1865. He was mustered as a comrade of Luke Mayfield Post No. 516; G. A. R. Dept. of Illinois on the 31st day of August, 1865. This gives him a duration of membership in Girard Post of something more than thirty years. In 1865, when Mr. Bauswell was a soldier in the civil war, his parents, Joseph and Mrs. Elizabeth Rutherford, could boast of fourteen sons in the two families, then serving in the Union Army. So pertinent an item was recorded by the Carlinville Democrat, a county paper and a year or two since in its column of "Forty Years Ago Items" it called the attention of Macoupin County citizenship to this fact, with a comment of emphatic pride and recognition.
Mr. Bauswell had a residence in Girard of forty-two years, and was duly respected and honored by the entire citizenship of the Girard community. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock in the M.E. church, conducted by pastor Rev. E. N. Barringer. Internment at Girard Cemetery.
