U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Yale University, in 1950 and served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, during the Korean War, (1950-52). After the war, he graduated Temple University Evening Law School Philadelphia, in 1958 and was a lawyer in private practice. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1965-67) and a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate, (1967-69). In 1969, he was elected as a Republican to the Ninety-first Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1993. After retiring from Congress, he joined the law firm of Eckert Seamans Cherin & Mellott and then the law firm of Thompson Coburn in 2001 and also served as president of the Friends of the U.S. National Arboretum, until his death from cancer at age 71.
