United States Marine Corps General. He was promoted to Major General in 1911 and served as the eleventh Commandant of the Marine Corps from 1911 to 1914. Although he retired in 1914, he returned to active duty at the San Diego Naval Base during World War I. He died in Nice, France. During the Spanish American War he was a captain and commanding officer of the Marine Guard on USFS Olympia, Commodore George Dewey's flagship of the 7-ship Asiatic Squadron and at the Battle of Manila Bay. Additionally, he was Marine Officer of the Fleet.
