Rhode Island Governor. He was a stock broker on the New York Stock Exchange at the age of twenty-one. Returning to Rhode Island, he was Director of Industrial Trust Company of Newport, the International Silver Company, a State Representative, (1902-12) and a State Senator, (1912-14). In 1915, he was elected as a Republican the Governor of Rhode Island, serving until 1921. As Governor, he reformed state institutions, state prisons, hospitals and established a state parole board. He died of a heart attack at age 68 while at his winter home in California.
