Elizabeth "Betsey" Mead Brown Biography

Elizabeth "Betsey" Mead was born on December 11, 1760 in Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut. She was the daughter of Captain Matthew Mead (b. 1734; d. 1812, both in Greenwich) and Mary Bush Mead (b. February 3, 1741; d. before June 1813, both in Greenwich.

Betsey's father, Captain Matthew Mead, was a private in the Continental Army from May until December 1775 and subsequently served as a Captain in the Connecticut Militia, Ninth Regiment, in 1776 and 1777. He was the younger brother of Brigadier General John(4) Mead who for three years commanded the American Lines at Horseneck.

Betsey's mother, Mary Bush Mead, was the daughter of Justus Bush and Elizabeth Ann Belden.

Betsey married John Brown in May 1780 in Greenwich. He was born on March 14, 1760 in Stratford or Greenwich, Fairfield County, Connecticut, the son of Edmund Brown (b. Sep 1728 in Greenwich) and Abigail Smith Brown (b. February 3, 1735 in Fairfield County, Connecticut).

John enlisted to serve in the Revolutionary War on January 4, 1778, at the age of 17. He served into 1780 and 1781. There was no record of final discharge. In his military records his residence was listed as Horseneck. (Source: Johnston, Henry P., ed., Record of Service of Connecticut Men in the War of the Revolution, War of 1812, and Mexican War. 1889: Adjutant-General's Office, Hartford, Connecticut, Chapter II: Connecticut Continental Troops; Section: Col. Sheldon's Regiment Dragoons. p. 286). After his service, he had a successful home building business.
