Husband of Emily Sarah Eunice Pierce, married 8 FEB 1868 in Paw Paw, Lee County, Illinois in service performed by the Rev. Charles Breed. Son of Horace Greeley and Susan Lucretia Leana (Cone) Barnes.

Orton enlisted as Pvt. Co. H. 89th Regiment, Illinois Inf at Brostol, on August 1863 (30yrs.) Union Army of Civil War for 3 years, Capt F.M. Hobbes in command. Wounded left leeeg below knee by musket Minie ball, Battle of Stone's Rive, Murphyboro's TN on 31 Dec 1862. New Years eve Hospitalized at Nashville TN and Louis vill KY for 5 mon, transferred to Veteran Reserc Corps. He received invalid pension 1870. Honorable discharged 7 July 1865 at Jackson Michigan. Name is on bronze plaque list of soldiers hanging in Kendall Co IL courthouse.

BATTLE: The opposing forces at Stone's River TN the Union Army, the Army of the CUmberland (14th Army Corps), Maj.Gen Wm S. Rosecrans in command, the Second division, Brig Gen Richard Johnson in command; the first (late sixth) Brigade (89th ILL) Brig Gen August Willich in command.. Brigade loss: k:90 w:373 M:701 totallng 1164. "The confederate movement began at daybreak.. The first movement in their fornt was observed by the Union skirmish line , but that first movement was a rush as of a tornado. The skirmishers fell back steadily, fighting... far to the right, the Confederate line came sweeping on likr the resistless tide, driving artillarists from their guns and infantry from their encampments. Slowly the extreme right fell back(Union line - extremeright under Willich and Kirk) at frist contesting every inch of ground. In Kirk's Brigrade 500 men were killed, or wounded, in a few minutes. Willich lost nearly as many. The battle raged, the the confederates wavered and fell back and the first day's fight was over, New Year's was a day of fair weather.

CONE FAMILY IN AMERICA Descendents of Daniel Cone, Who Settled in Haddam Connecticut in 1682 (1903) p.381,440-1Horace and Susan Barnes were devout Christians. The story has been told concerning the eldest son, Orton. He, together with several of his boy chums, was discovered playing cards in the layloft of a neighbors barn. Definite disciplinary action was taken by Deacon Barnes when he invited and forced the boys to play cards night after night for weeks.

Orton enlisted as a Private, Company H, 89th Regiment, Illinois Infantry (Union Army) , at Bristol on 9 August 1862. He was 20 years of age, 5 foot 9 1/2 inches tall, hazel eyes and brown hair. He served for 3 years under Captain F.M. Hobbs. Orton was wounded in the left leg below the knee by musket minie ball during the Battle of Stone's River, Murphyboro's, Tennessee, on 31 Dec 1862. He was hospitalized at Nashville, TN, and Louisville, KY for 5 months, then transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. He received an invalid pension in 1870. Honorably discharged on 7 July 1865 at Jackson, Michigan.

Orton was reared as a farmer and obtained his education at Public Schools of Kendall County, Wesleyan, Bloomington, Illinois. He was a teacher at 'Old Academy', Paw Paw, Illinois from 1867 till 1872.

About 1872 the family moved to Missouri, traveling via boat from Illinois, to Farmingham, Iowa, then by team and spring wagon to Scotland County, Missouri. There they settled on a farm located north of Memphis, Union township, Brock neighborhood (NE corner of the state).

Orton served as Judge of Circuit Court, Scotland County, was a member of the Republician party, member of Bethel Methodist Chuch; Murray Post No. 179,l Grand Army of the Republic of Memphis; Masonic Lodge; and on the board of trustees of his church.
