Cassius Edwin Beverly was born on April 15, 1856, in Cuba Township, to Philetus and Lovisa (Mix) Beverly.
His parents emigrated from New York to take up farming in Lake County; later, they moved on to Kansas with their children.

Beverly joined the Union Army in February, 1864, as a Private in Company C, 2nd Light Artillery. The company provided guards at Fort Donelson and Clarksville, Tennessee and engaged in some skirmishes.

Private Cassius Beverly died of disease in Fort Donelson, Tennessee on December 29, 1864, at the age of 18. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Barrington.
