She was born April 17, 1922 in Chatham, Ontario, Candada, the daughter of Royce and Ida (Cavanaugh) Nightenhelser. She married Henry M. "Hank" Kauffman on March 8, 1941, in LaGrange, Indiana, and she devoted her life to being a homemaker and mother. In 1953, they moved from South Bend to Berrien Springs, where she worked with her husband on their fruit farm on Shawnee Road. In later years, Ellen and Hank also worked together operating their janitorial business. They moved to Eau Claire in 1995.
Survivors include sons Danny (Debra) and Terry (Rhonda), all of Eu Claire, 6 grandchildren, Kyle Kauffman, Kristopher Jauffman, Kourtney (Zach) Stuckey, Ana (Hollon) Skyler, A.J. Kauffman, and Abigail; two great-grandchildren, Sophia Skyler and Emma Stuckey; and a sister, Iva Lake of Marion, Indiana.
Ellen was preceded in death by her husband Hank on January 11, 2004; and a brother, Vern.
