Author. He was an English author of the 20th century, who spent most of his life in Spain, studying the Spanish culture, especially literature and language. His most-recognized books include the 1943 "El Laberinto Español," which was based on the Spanish Civil War, and "Sur de Granada." He lived and died in Alhaurín el Grande in Granada. At the time of his death, his body was donated to the Medicine Faculty of Málaga for medical research and later cremated and buried. Born the son of a military officer, he was educated in a boarding school while his father was deployed, but did live in India and South Africa. He attended Radley College and then the Military Academy at Sandhurst, while studying literature mainly on his own. Between August of 1912 and January of 1913, he and a friend walked to China. He lived in Germany for a time. During World War I, he served in the British Army in France and was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix de Guerre in 1918. He joined with the English literary group, Bloomsbury Group, before going to Spain in 1919. He wrote under the name George Beaton on his first two novels. He stayed in Spain until 1934, when he and his wife returned to England. In 1953, the couple returned to Spain. From 1978 until his death, he wrote two books and an unfinished book of poetry. He was awarded the Order of Commander of the British Empire in 1982. In the mid-1980s he was now a widower with his health declining. At that point, he was declared a living monument of Spain and was supported by the municipality of Alhaurin el Grande until his death.
