Carl was sent to Madras, East India by the German Missionary Society to serve the Tamils, starting his service on May 31, 1871. Carl and Marie were married Dec. 26, 1872 in Madras, East India. They emigrated to the United States in 1876 according to the 1900 Census. He then served as pastor at Sheboygan, Wisconsin from 1876 to 1881; Cleveland, Ohio from 1881 to 1911. Carl was naturalized in Cleveland, Ohio in 1882. He was an author of numerous books on theological topics and books of the Bible. Their children included Carl Jr, Otto, Kurt and Walter.
