The Gunn Family Bible revealed that he died of consumption.

James Tucker Gunn served in the Confederate States of America. He began as a Private, May 25, 1861, under Capt. Robert C. Foster's Company, 1 Regiment Tennessee Infantry. In 1862/63 he was a Sergeant on Special Duty at General Polk's Headquarters.

As evidence that he was a member of the Knights of Honor his headstone has the emblem O M A and the notation K. of H.
