Dr. Lyman Taft Gunn was born in Montague, Mass., April 1, 1810. He descended from the Montague's of England and he was also connected with the Taft Family. His mother, Mary Lyman Taft Gunn, died shortly after his birth. After her death, young Lyman spent the early years of life with the Taft family, predominately with Mrs. Taft, the grandmother of President Taft.

He was educated in Boston and studied dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania where he received his degree. He moved to Nashville a few years before the Civil War and was one of the first dentists in Nashville. He was associated with a Dr. Morgan and he practiced dentistry for over 40 years in Nashville.

Dr. Gunn was at the home of his daughter, Sophia Riley Gunn Moran in Weakley County TN, when he passed away. He was buried in Nashville's City Cemetery in the Gunn Lot. Unfortunately, most of the Gunn family headstone's have been lost to vandalism, weather, and time.
