The body of Staff Sergeant Raymond Jackson Butts, Jr. arrived in Kansas City this morning and is at Newcomer's mortuary. The 19-year-old son of Mrs. Frances Rebecca Patton, 2715 South Nineteenth Street, was killed in action on December 9, 1943.

Staff Sergeant Butts was a Marine Paratrooper and served with the 1st Marine Parachute Regiment, Headquarters Company. He lost his life on Bougainville Island in the South Pacific when he volunteered to lead a three-man group to destroy a hostile machine gun. Both of his companions were wounded, and the sergeant administered first aid, then proceeded alone to accomplish the mission before he was killed. The young hero was posthumously awarded the Silver Star Medal for gallantry in action. He also received a personal Presidential Citation and the Purple Heart Medal.

Before entering the service, Staff Sergeant Butts attended Northeast High School and was employed in the office of the Western Union in Kansas City. He was a member of the Kansas City Order of DeMolay, Northeast Chapter.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Maranda Miller, St. Joseph, and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. John J. Butts, Raytown, Mo.

Services will be conducted at 4 p.m. tomorrow at Newcomer's chapel in Kansas City, the Rev. Will Session officiating. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery. Former DeMolay brothers will serve as pallbearers.
