On September 26, 1862, Wade enlisted as a recruit at Danielsville, in Madison County, Ga. in the Army of Northern Virginia, CSA Company A, 16th Reg. Volunteer Infantry, a member of the "Madison County Grays". He was sent to Richmond, Virginia, to protect the Capitol, and was issued straw and a blanket on the "Old Fair Grounds". He caught "walking pneumonia" and was sent to Chimboraza Hospital, where he contracted typhoid fever. He died on February 18, 1863 in the hospital, and was buried at Oakwood Cemetary in Richmond, Va., Section E, Row F, Grave 30. There is a memorial stone in the High Shoals, Ga. Baptist Church Cemetery, through the efforts of 2 of his great-great-grandchildren
