Jas. L. Rankin, Sr., one of the best-known men of the county died Monday night of heart-failure. The Squire Rankin, as he was known to his hundreds of friends, had been in failing health for the last two or three years and had retired from active business life, his death came as a shock to even the members of his family and closest friends.
J.L. Rankin had until last year or so been engaged in the general merchandise business at Fords Ferry for thirty years or longer with the exception of a few years which he spent in Marion in the same business while his children were in school here.
He is survived by his widow and by three sons, James, Jr., Wallace, Harold, and by four daughters, Mrs. Gilliam Bracey, Mrs. Roy Hamilton, Mrs. Henry Phillips, and Miss Sarah Lee Rankin.
