US Navy Rear Admiral. Adams graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1930. In May of 1941 he was ordered to the Naval Academy for duty with the Executive Department of the Academy. His first command was the U.S.S. Henley in 1943. After his tour with the Henley he was reassigned to the Bureau of Naval Personnel followed by an appointment as Commander Destroyer Division 34 and subsequently appointed as Commander Destroyer Division 6. His next command was as Commander Destroyer Division 52. During World War II he was awarded the Purple Heart as well as the Silver Star. In the summer of 1949 he was named the Commandant of the Naval Academy.
