Joseph P. Maloney, 86, of Arnold, died Friday, July 15, 2011, in his home. He was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Linwood, Upper Chichester Township, Delaware County, to the late James J. Sr. and Kathryn (Thomas) Maloney, and had lived in the local area since 1965. He was the field director and director of education for the Boy Scouts of America, Greater Pittsburgh Council for 35 years, retiring in 1987. He was an Army veteran of World War II serving as a staff sergeant with the First Battalion of the 137th Infantry Division and was in the Battle of the Bulge. He received the European, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with four Bronze Stars, the American Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was a graduate of Penn State University with a bachelor of science in horticulture. Joe was a very active member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in New Kensington for more than 45 years, where he was an altar server, member of the Resurrection Choir, Church Choir and Holy Name Society. He was a Past Grand Knight of the New Kensington Knights of Columbus 1381 was the council recorder, a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, its secretary and a team member of their color guard. He was also a member of the Kiwanis, in Canonsburg, the St. Vincent DePaul Society and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He enjoyed working with computers, helping people and was a volunteer for the Boys Scouts at Camp Guyasuta outside Aspinwall. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Vivian M. DePue Maloney; children, Joseph Maloney, of Flushing, Mich., Linda (William) Pazul, of State College, Michael (Debra) Maloney, of Shakopee, Minn., Dennis (Angela) Maloney, of Taiwan, China, Kathleen Hanzlik, of Aliquippa, and Kevin Maloney, of Columbia, Md.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by brothers, James J. Jr., Martin, David and Thomas Maloney; and sisters, Katherine Carey, Anna Mahon and Margaret Curl. Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the RUSIEWICZ OF LOWER BURRELL FUNERAL HOME, 3124 Leechburg Road, Lower Burrell, where a blessing service will be held at 8:30 Wednesday followed by Christian Funeral Mass at 9 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, New Kensington. Burial will be in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil. The Knights of Columbus will conduct a Rosary service at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. www.rusiewiczfh.com.
