In 1860, he was a saddler living in Newton Township, Cumberland County, and stood 5' 10 tall with light hair and gray eyes. A U.S Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg April 20,1861, as a private with Company A. 2nd Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company July 24, 1891,at Harrisburg. He then enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, August 8,1861, mustered into federal service at Washington D.C, August 17 as a private with Company H,3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry (60th Pa), promoted to Saddler September 1, 1861, and honorably discharged at term's end August 24, 1864. Other dates show up in his Military file as " Enrolled at Chambersburg on April 18,1861 Discharged at Harrisburg July 26,1861 ". Pension Certificate #-913033. Married Clarissa "Clara" Jane Williams on November 23,1865 in Newville, PA. by Rev. W.O Owen. Had 12 children, All born in Pennsylvania.
