The Obituary from his Memorial Service

Dr. Louis J. Cleage, 81 years of age, died of heart failure on Sunday October 9, in Anderson, South Carolina, where he had resided for the past two years. He was a graduate of Wayne State University Medical School and practiced General Medicine and Surgery with graduate studies in Cardiology.


Dr. Cleage was a charter member of the Shrine of the Black Madonna Church and a lifetime member of the NAACP. He was well known in the Detroit community for his lifetime involvement with civil rights. He was a contributing editor of the Illustrated News where he wrote the column "Smoke Rings". He ran for office on the Freedom Now Party ballot.


Dr. Cleage was one of the originators of the Black Slate, a political awareness organization in Michigan, Georgia and Texas. He maintained a summer home in Idlewild, Michigan for fifty years where he spent many happy vacations. He spoke Spanish fluently and traveled extensively in Mexico.


Known for his generosity, kindness and interest in scholastic achievement, he will be remembered by many to whom he gave financial support and encouragement.
