LTjg Walter Madden Gregory was one of eighty-six persons killed aboard submarine USS Growler (SS-215) on 8 November 1944. Growler was on her eleventh war patrol, and was part of a coordinated attack along with USS Hardhead and USS Hake off of Manila. Growler was presumed to have been sunk by depth charges.
Walter was the son of Beulah and Walter Gregory and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1942. Was was awarded the Purple Heart medal.
